Sacred Heart Church Annual Clambake - 5pm - 8pm at the Sacred Heart Church parking lot. Salad, steamed clams, corn on the cob, sausages, barbecued chicken, boiled lobster, watermelon, hot and cold drinks and rolls make up the menu. There will be a Big Money Drawing with more than $15,000 worth of prizes. August 9 is the cut-off date for dinner tickets, but Big Money Drawing tickets will be sold up to the date of the event. All proceeds benefit the church. Tables of 10 can be reserved. Price per dinner is $22 per person and price of the Big Money Drawing is $50 a ticket. Nurse assistant training offered - WATCH, Waltham's nonprofit community development corporation, is offering low-cost nurse assistant and home health aide career training beginning August 18. Classes will be taught at the Deaconess Waltham Hospital, four days a week, by the American Red Cross. English proficiency is required. The cost is $495 for nurse assistant (four weeks) and $295 for home health aide training (three weeks). Welfare recipients may qualify for a tuition subsidy. Space is limited. Waltham Committee Road Race - 2pm at Waverley Oaks Athletic Club, 411 Waverley Oaks Road. Waltham Committee, a private nonprofit human service agency that provides residential and employment support to developmentally disabled adults, presents its Third Annual 5-Mile Road Race (wheelchair racers are welcome). Pre-entry registration $12; same day $15. Proceeds from the event will help to provide ongoing necessities such as vacation grants, scholarships and replacement of worn or outdated furniture and equipment. Fifty Years of Music with Dorothy Slamin Hill - 5:30pm at the Hillcrest Function Facilities, 220 Bear Hill Road. The Kiwanis Club and the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post #156 present the legendary Dot Hill and her 70 piece marching and singing band. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30, followed by Dot Hill directing the band. A complete family syle roast beef dinner will be served at 7:30. There will be dancing with the "P & M Sound", and a program with master of ceremonies John P. "Jake" Comer. Donation is $30 per person. Please make checks out to: Waltham Kiwanis Club. Sojourner Truth drama - The Carriage House at Gore Place presents the drama entitled "A Woman Ain't I!" from 2 to 3pm. The program, as recreated by Kathryn Woods, tells the story of Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree. Community forum "Our Youth ... Their Decisions" will be presented by the Middlesex Human Service Agency, Inc. at 7pm at Government Center in Waltham. This forum will be an open discussion about the prevention of substance abuse and violence designed for parents, educators, professionals and teens. The panel will be moderated by Steve Fogg, safety officer of the Waltham Police Department. The forum will be opened by Mayor William F. Stanley. Topics will include the types of prevention services available for teens, useful strategies for adults on alcohol and drug prevention, peer pressure, teen violence and more. Waltham Mill Artists Open Studios - Waltham Mill Artists hold their 21st Annual Open Studios event on November 1st and 2nd, 12 Noon to 5 PM.
60 artists and craftsman open their studios to the public for this popular annual walk-through and FREE art show. Park at the Embassy lot and walk across the foot bridge to the mills at 144 Moody Street. Artists encourage Waltham residents especially to come and enjoy this unique cultural event.
The Waltham Mill Artists Association is sad to report that this year may be the last such open studios event, as the Gordon Family of Newton is taking legal steps to evict the entire resident arts community at the mills. Come and show your support for Waltham's unique artists' community before it's too late. BOYCOTT GORDON'S LIQUORS!

Annual Steeplecock Fair - The Annual Steeplecock Fair of the First Congregational Church will take place from 5pm to 8pm on Friday, and from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, with a dinner to be served at 6:30pm. A gift boutique will have a vast assortment of handcrafted articles and Christmas decorations. Featured will be "American Girl" doll clothes, home-baked goods, jams, jellies, preserves, soups, and chili, a sparkling array of jewelry, and a wide range of books. Also featured will be a roomful of "treasures" old and new, and a "barn" with an assortment of garden tools. On Friday evening, a light supper will be served during the fair hours. A cafeteria luncheon will be served on Saturday from 11:30am to 1pm. The Saturday night dinner will feature roast pork. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 7 years of age and under. Children's auditions for Reagle show - Children's auditions for the 15th edition of Reagle Players "ChistmasTime" will be held at Robinson Theatre, Waltham High School, 617 Lexington Street. Audition times are 10am for boys and girls in grades 1 through 3 for the elves, 10am for girl and boy dancers grades 4 through 7; and 11am for boys grades 3 through 7 for a new Santa production number added to the show this year. Nine performances are scheduled for the weekends of December 5, 6, and 7 and December 12, 13, and 14.

Craft Fair at Plympton School - The Plympton School PTO will host its annual craft fair from 9am to 3pm, at the school at 20 Farnsworth Street. The fair will include 30 vendors of hand crafted items, such as American Girl clothing, Victorian and country items, and a variety of Beanie Babie accessories. A new addition to this year's fair is breakfast with Santa, where families can enjoy a continental breakfast and children can have their pictures taken with Santa. A supervised craft-making area for children ages 3 to 10 is available, and lunch is a selection of pizza, hot dogs, popcorn and homemade baked goods. Holiday Decorating Contest - In keeping with the holiday season, the Waltham City of Choice Committee presents its Holiday Decorating Contest for homeowners and businesses. Last year's contest was a big success. Categories this year will be: House Exterior; Window/Door; and Lawn/Tree. Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each category, with possible honorable mentions. The contest is open to all Waltham residents. All entries must be for outside decorations. Applications were available in mid-November with a deadline for submission by December 8. Judging will take place the week of December 15 and winners will be announced shortly thereafter. Waltham Farmers' Market - June 14 through October 18, 1997 The Waltham Farmers' Market celebrates its seventh season at the Fleet Bank parking lot in downtown Waltham, The market is held rain or shine, and is open from 10am - 3pm every Saturday. The Fleet Bank parking lot is located at the intersection of Main and Moody streets, across from Waltham Common.
Clothing of the Federal Era - June 15 - October 15, 1997 - Gore Estate - Gore Estate will present an exhibit of late 18th and early 19th century clothing entitled: "Dressed for the Occasion: Clothing of the Federal Era." - Tuesday through Saturday, 11am - 5pm, and Sundays, 1pm - 5pm. $4 adults, $3 seniors, $2 children 5-12, discounts for AAA and WGBH cardholders, members free. Ample free parking.
Used book donation drive The National Archives Records Administration, in partnership with the Department of Education, will collect books throughout the summer to be disbursed in the fall. "America Reads" is a used book donation drive for New England's neediest children. Books may be dropped off Monday through Friday, from 7am to 4:30pm at the National Archives and Records Administration, 380 Trapelo Road. Television production class - Waltham Community Access Corporation, the Waltham Channel, is once again offering its free basic television production course to Waltham residents. This course is available to residents, while remaining seats will be offered to those who work and attend school in Waltham. This course begins on Saturday, September 20, and continues for seven consecutive weeks. The meeting time will be from 11am to 1pm. The course will be held in the facility at 400 Main Street. Annual Mitten Drive - Autumn 1997 The Salvation Army needs help in gathering mittens, gloves and scarves that will be used to help children and adults stay warm this winter season. As you go through the malls and stores, please keep those who are less fortunate than you in mind. Citizens Police Academy - The Waltham Police Department 10-week Citizens' Police Academy program begins Tuesday, September 23 from 6:30 to 9:30pm. The Citizens Academy is a law enforcement educational program developed to provide local citizens and business owners with a behind-the-scenes look at police work.
